A New Chapter Begins: Bri & Joey’s Maternity Session

A First Maternity Session I’ll Never Forget

I had never photographed a maternity session before, and when I was asked, I honestly didn’t hesitate—I couldn’t say no.

Bri is Maia’s best friend from college, and over the years I’ve had the chance to witness so many meaningful moments in their lives. This season felt no different—just even more special. Bri married her high school sweetheart, Joey, a few years ago, and now they’re preparing to become first-time parents.

When Bri asked Maia if I would photograph their maternity session, my answer was simple: of course I can. Even though it was my first time, I was more than willing to jump in—and I’m so glad I did.

Turns out… I absolutely love maternity sessions.

Why Maternity Sessions Are So Special

Maternity sessions are about so much more than just documenting a growing belly. They capture a quiet, emotional season of anticipation, connection, and love before everything changes.

There’s something incredibly meaningful about freezing this moment in time—the excitement, the nerves, the way couples naturally lean into each other as they prepare for their new role as parents.

These sessions are often slower, more intentional, and filled with genuine connection. And as a photographer, it’s such an honor to document that.

Location

The parents-to-be and I chose a beautiful outdoor location in Whitewater, Wisconsin. I had never been to this little park before, but it ended up being absolutely perfect.

We scheduled the session in the evening, which gave us that soft, golden hour light filtering through the trees. The glow added so much warmth and depth to the images—it truly couldn’t have worked out better.

Between the natural scenery and the calm atmosphere, it created the perfect setting for a relaxed and meaningful session.

The Session

Bri and Joey made everything feel effortless. Their connection is so natural, and they slipped into each moment without needing much direction at all.

We captured a variety of scenes—

  • sitting together on a blanket

  • walking hand-in-hand down a path

  • standing beneath the trees

  • relaxing on a fallen tree trunk

  • and sharing quiet moments on a small footbridge

Every spot we stopped at just worked. The combination of their chemistry, the setting, and the light made the entire session feel easy and genuine.

My Takeaway

This session exceeded every expectation I had. Not only did it give me confidence in trying something new, but it also opened my eyes to how much I truly enjoy maternity photography.

Maternity sessions hold such a special place—they’re about connection, emotion, and the beginning of a brand-new chapter.

And after this experience, I can confidently say…
I can’t wait to capture more of these moments.
