Christmas Family Photos in Sun Prairie, WI Without the December Rush.
Why We Photograph Holiday Sessions Early
Christmas photos don’t have to wait until December. Scheduling your family’s holiday photos earlier in the season means less stress, more flexibility, and plenty of time to create Christmas cards, gifts, and artwork. For families around Sun Prairie and Madison, Wisconsin, an earlier holiday session also means getting ahead of unpredictable winter weather and the December rush.
Every year, December seems to arrive faster than expected. Suddenly there are gifts to buy, cookies to bake, school programs to attend, parties on the calendar, travel plans to make — and somewhere in the middle of everything, you realize: “We still need Christmas pictures.”
Here's our advice: Don't wait until December. Some of the best Christmas photos happen long before the holiday rush begins.
At PS Photography, we intentionally begin offering holiday photography early so families have time to enjoy the experience — and actually use their photographs during the Christmas season.
Christmas Photos Don't Have to Happen in December
It can feel a little strange thinking about Christmas photos when you're still enjoying fall. But your photographs aren't just for Christmas Day. Families use holiday photos for Christmas cards, gifts for grandparents, framed prints, ornaments, social media, and artwork around their homes. If you wait until December to have the photos taken, you're also waiting for the gallery to be edited and delivered before you can begin doing anything with those images. Photographing earlier gives you something that's hard to find in December: Time.
You'll Have Time for Christmas Cards
If Christmas cards are part of your family's tradition, an earlier session makes the entire process easier. Instead of choosing your photographs, designing cards, ordering them, addressing envelopes, and getting everything mailed during the busiest weeks of December, you can have much of it finished before the holiday season is in full swing. That means your Christmas cards can actually be something you enjoy creating instead of one more deadline.
Your Photos Can Become Christmas Gifts
Family photographs also make meaningful Christmas gifts. Grandparents rarely need another coffee mug. But a beautiful photograph of their children or grandchildren? That's different. Prints, framed photographs, canvases, and other artwork can become personal gifts that mean more as the years go by. Having your session earlier gives you enough time to choose your favorite images and order artwork without worrying about last-minute holiday deadlines.
Wisconsin Weather Isn't Getting Any Warmer
There's another practical reason we like photographing Christmas sessions before December: Wisconsin weather.
November certainly isn't tropical, but waiting until December can mean colder temperatures, snow, wind, icy conditions, and children who decide they're completely finished with family photos approximately 90 seconds after stepping outside. Earlier Christmas sessions can give us more flexibility while still creating the cozy holiday feeling families want. And when we're photographing around Christmas trees, evergreens, blankets, sweaters, and other seasonal details, your photographs can feel like Christmas even when the calendar says otherwise.
Kids Usually Do Better Without the Holiday Chaos
December isn't just busy for adults. It's busy for kids, too. School activities, altered schedules, parties, travel, excitement, later bedtimes, and anticipation can make December a lot for little ones. Family photos are much easier when children aren't already exhausted from everything else happening around them. Scheduling earlier gives us the opportunity to make the session part of the excitement leading into Christmas rather than squeezing it into an already packed December calendar.
But Will It Actually Feel Like Christmas?
Yes. Christmas photographs aren't created by a date on the calendar. They're created through the setting, clothing, details, colors, and — most importantly — the people in the photographs. Evergreen trees, cozy layers, holiday colors, blankets, and family connection can create that unmistakable Christmas feeling weeks before December arrives. And there's something especially fun about stepping into Christmas a little early for an evening.
What Should We Wear?
You don't need matching Christmas pajamas or everyone dressed in red and green unless that's genuinely your family's style. Instead, think about coordinating. Creams, neutrals, deep greens, burgundy, denim, warm browns, plaids, and subtle holiday colors can photograph beautifully without making the images feel overly themed. Layers also work especially well for outdoor Wisconsin sessions — sweaters, cardigans, jackets, scarves, and boots can add texture while keeping everyone comfortable. Above all, choose clothing that allows your family to move, cuddle, laugh, and interact naturally.
When Should You Schedule Christmas Photos?
If you're hoping to use your photographs for Christmas cards, gifts, or holiday artwork, October through November is a much better window than waiting until December. Earlier sessions give you more flexibility with scheduling and more time after your gallery is delivered. And perhaps most importantly, they allow you to check one meaningful thing off your holiday list before December gets hectic.
